The former presidential candidate and political prisoner Andrei Sannikau has been released from prison. Sannikau was arrested  on December 19th, 2010, in connection with the protests against electoral fraud in Minsk, after the presidential election. He was sentenced to five years in prison.

Sannikau was subjected to torture during his time in prison. He has told independent media in Belarus that the clemency he wrote in November 2011, which was sent to president Lukashenka, was written under threats.

At least fourteen people in Belarus are still imprisoned for political reasons, including another former presidential candidate; Mikolaj Statkevich - and the country’s leading human rights defender Ales Bjaljatski.
